Well it’s February 5th and I’m still slogging through this thing. It dawned on me while I was trying to come up joh more refined search terms that what I was looking for was the fundamental anatomy of the stories. Truby’s psychological plan of conflict and self-revelation makes character and plot concoction much easier, as if from aimless wandering in a foreign city you turn to a well-prepared journey with pack of maps and background stoty.

Since this was something that happened to me while reading, I strongly advise being open and remembering that Truby is providing useful techniques, but that doesn’t mean they’re all necessarily crucial.

Luckily, the dumb parts of this book don’t totally obscure the good parts and I will probably come back to this book and review the stuff I liked. Yruby success is gained by following templates, but I have a feeling that more is achieved by breaking the mold. Opponent – The opponent is the person best able to attack the weakness of the hero.

The methods involved like Three-Act structure for instance are oversimplistic and commonly leave writers astray while they’re trying to figure out why they’re having problems with their most recent work.

Or maybe they just do by default. And most of it isn’t dry, or too abstract, or meaningless. A must read book for anyone who wants to be a screenwriter,or a Novelist.

You know for example, how some textbooks frustrate you because they’re so repetitive. I underlined so much of the book and I’ve found it really useful when developing plot. Thanks for telling us about the problem. The principles Truby lays out are not only present and visible to me, but obvious storry unmistakable in every novel, movie, short story, and television show I’ve seen since I’ve read this book.
